An interesting take on bell towers. Allow me to reach into the deepest pockets of my imagination and declare this as my throne. The sweet throne of separation. The seat is the space in the middle, your arms fixed by the thick walls that also blind that noisy peripheral view. You put your head into the bell with its clapper rested square on your nose. The horn-like protrusions seems to be displeased and turned their backs on each other. They could just be confused arches that went the wrong way. On a windy day, you can wear your shirt, hanger still intact, and hang yourself on either horn. The foolish wind will become you and you, the wind.

Most of the Parthenon’s well preserved ornaments were impressively displayed at the British Museum. Everything was showcased on eye level, too close to touch yet deceptively delicate to hold. Imagine hype boiling, thickening and pushing its viscous spirit into my frail caliber. The thought of stepping atop Acropolis in a few days time makes me forget about sleep.

The crutch clad, recovering Parthenon, hiding behind the Propylaea only gave me a short warning, as if a merciless surprise, of its current state. Disappointed (overstating), for the stage is not yet set for my unforetold arrival. I wished for it as it was in my books. I did get to touch a centuries old marble column, the inspiration for Greek proportions, carved by ancient Greeks. Incidentally, I found closure for all those temple sketches in college.

Santorini was trumped by Boracay on the World’s best island list by Travel + Leisure magazine. I say we can all have that fine white sand, clear waters, good food, late night parties island experience almost anywhere in the world but Santorini magic only stays in Santorini.

I see this and wonder where were the Filipinos during this construction period of these Khmers. We could have made something grand and establish an architectural identity. “Those Filipino islanders are so in the dark. They have islanders within islanders. Beaches? Mother Nature’ll renaissance that for them,” what my ancient Khmer self would say. I cannot even define a central Mindanawon motif.
